Bad Company (PMC Hatchet 4) review + selling Judge!

Post by seaQ » 03 Jul 2014, 18:49

This might be a long read but I hope you'll enjoy it cause it sure took it's time to write! :)

Team: PMC

Unit: Hatchet – 4 – 1 with all of Hatchet 4 being a mechanized unit. We consisted of 4 vehicles to start with and some 23 players.

H-4-1 - Bad Company (platoon leader)
H-4-2 - Hells Kittens
H-4-3 - Scrappers
H-4-4 - G.B.M (aka. THE TANK)

Initial alliances: We initially would be allied with the Ravens and Border Patrol. Secondly we were neutral to all other teams except UA17.

Background history:
Once again, our group Bad Company returns to the Berget battlefields! On our previous visits we’ve always played as civilians or terrorists. This year we wanted to do something different and having access to a pretty nice in-game vehicle we decided to go with a PMC mechanized unit.

Wednesday:
At game start we had no actual mission so we started by rolling out towards the southern border hoping to be fast enough to get inside Lerando. Unfortunately, since we we’re delayed at the base we did not get there in time to get inside the country. Ravens had blocked the road off and would only let 2 cars pass.
Trying to avoid getting stuck between the border guards and the Ravens we turned around and headed back to base. Some people in 4-3 riding on the outside mounted up on our vehicles and we went for the northern entryway to the game area.

When we arrived we decided to go check out the northern part of hero’s peak and see what we could find. Once at the northern “unmanned” border crossing we came into contact with the ravens that had secured the border crossing. We sent our negotiator forward to make them let us pass, which he successfully did. Once all vehicles had passed the checkpoint we were unfortunately pretty bunched up and that is when all hell broke loose.

Our car took the first BAVS hit and we tried pushing forward while screaming on the radio for the others to drive. About 10 seconds later the other BAVS hit came and our car was destroyed. We quickly disembarked and ran to the woods (some surviving, some not). I actually ran into what I considered to be a pretty good cover and jumped over a dirt wall. On the other side I noticed my friend trying to do the same but took a hit before he came over. I quickly dragged him across and started healing him.

Image

At this time, we had no clue about who hit us as we had seen both red and yellow guys shooting. From my spot I saw a bunch of yellow guys hiding behind the vehicle (pretty open from my angle) behind our car. I then started too shot my 40mm against their car and actually took it out which caused the 3-4 guys behind it to move in to the woods some 10 meters in front of me. Lucky for me they never saw me however they started advancing towards me.
When the first guy spotted me he was about 6 meters away and me already aiming at him I just waited for him to raise his weapon (confirming they were actually targeting us). I took him out and quickly took his 2-3 mates out behind him. At that moment some support gunner seemed to find my location and started to hail bullets all over the place and finally kill me after some 30 sec.

The other cars in our platoon did however never die so instead they pushed on and turned around, came back and RTB.

In that fight we got atleast 10-15+ kills with us being the ones in a disadvantage.

Since our car got knocked out, we couldn’t do that much more that day so we went to sleep instead!

Thursday:
What an eventful day!

We got up pretty early and checked in with HQ to see if any nice missions were planned. Lucky for us they had decided that our Mech unit was to transport Hatchet infantry up to the unmanned borders and capture these. This mission however wasn’t set for a couple of hours so we decided to quickly go visit the Lumberjack’s Cabin.

When we got there the place was crawling with Orlovs but they did however not fire upon us. Since they took us out yesterday we decided we would take the fight and opened up on them, killing off 10+ soldiers. They however did get one of our cars blown up and at that moment we decided on getting out of there with the rest of the cars intact.

When we got back we waited for our last car to spawn and once he did we started transporting troops up to the unmanned border points. Unfortunately not a single raven/orlov/other guy was there so we left the infantry and headed in to the country.

We drowe straight through the orlov checkpoint with our lead car killing of a couple of them and then figured we would check the same road as before (near lumberjacks cabin). The orlovs had blocked off the road there so we quickly turned around and headed for the southern border where unfortunately for us the Ravens were with their whole mech unit.

We dismounted the cars (except 4-4) and had some fighting inside the woods. The tank drove back and forth killing off people until he finally got taken out. Luckily enough our car had backed up and somehow turned around to exit the area through the northern unmanned borders.

After this we sat down for some well-deserved lunch!

When we once again headed out, our car was the only one active (others were still getting lunch) so we decided on going towards the Northern border just because the woods/roads there are pretty fun. Luckily for us, a fight was already going on there so we drove up our car to the front and unloaded some people and assisted with spotting enemies, healing friendlies and shouting stuff over our PA system.

After a while, orlovs and ravens seemed to have gotten around us and grouped up behind us so we floored it towards the actual border where the vehicle got hit one time with BAVS. We abandoned the car before the second hit came. All took defensive positions in the woods and we linked up with the people we had unloaded earlier. After waiting for atleast 20 minutes we got radioed by our 4’th car, the tank!

I told him where we were and that we could really need some help and the immediately started heading there. Unfortunately for us he got stuck behind the Hägglunds BV206 that was destroyed close to the “New mill”.

After another 10-20 minutes we had started repairing our car with engineers and the tank had gotten passed the BV206 and got up to our position. We started mounting up in the car again and drove off over the border.

After some rough driving up the hill we got a surprise when we realized that we had driven STRAIGHT into the Raven base! I quickly called to 4-4 over the radio and told them that the Ravens seemed to be having some kind of meeting and that he was free to engage! 5 seconds later at least 100+ Raven guys were running around looking for cover.

Image

We took a quick decision to turn right into the town of Dolina where another meeting were being held by the Ravens (another 100+ guys). It seemed like they hadn't heard us coming. Unfortunately when our second car came around the corner, he was to close to open fire on them and we got stuck by people insisting on standing in front of the vehicles.

We started screaming to them over the PA system and in the middle of this, the Raven commander walked up to our left passenger door, trying to open it (our doors were already locked). When he looked away, my friend unlocked the door, opened it, knife killed the commander (apparently only 2iC) and quickly closed the door. He looked pissed but took the “hit” and started walking towards respawn.

The guys in-front of the car finally moved away although we didn’t get far until someone else jumped in and after some time had passed they finally BAVS:ed us. We later checked with crew and standing in-front of car that is trying to go forward should have resulted in a hit from being “run-over” (we would love to see a rule update regarding this).

We drove back after the 10 minutes had passed, respawned and waited for the cars to respawn. Word got around there would be a base attack from the Ravens and since we knew they had been in a meeting some 10-20 minutes earlier and guys had started to move out towards our base, we didn’t question this. Our group rushed out to take the initial contact which also resulted in us dying first.

However, one of our guys got healed by the Ravens (the medic only stayed for 20 sec btw, my friend however did not move or shoot for 4 minutes). He then started sneaking up on the people (his goal was to kill that cheating medic) that healed him and took out some 25+ Ravens from the behind before getting shot by one of our Mech units.

Our last mission this day was to buy some mortar stuff from the new mill which we succeeded in doing without any bigger hassle. Our unit was in charge of the transport and cash handling. We also partook in some border defending after this mission was complete.

Image

Friday:
Our day started off pretty late (around 11:00) due to us getting into bed pretty late on thursday. When we had geared up and mounted our cars we were sent to the southern border to join the defenses. Nothing much happened except the bunker getting overrun and then re-taken by us.

At lunch time 2 of our people wanted to go inside Dolina on foot and gather information. They stripped of their battle gear and talked to the “Farmers/Moonshiners” on the lawnmower to give them a ride in to town.

Image

When they were done we figured we would give them a vehicle extraction, however, since they needed a bit of time to check out all the areas we came up with another idea instead. Since we knew where Orlovs had their base at this time we told HQ we wanted to blitz it with all of our cars. They liked our idea and gave us two more cars from another platoon which all-in-all made us 5 cars strong and some 20+ men.

We left our base and drove for the northern entryway and once their arranged our cars in the best possible order. Our car would be the last one to block of the roads for assisting cars but also to make a smoke screen once we drove past the Orlov checkpoint (we had a magnet mounted pipe for holding smoke grenades).

As we reached the checkpoint the first car gunned down 2 or 3 guys standing guard. When we reached the checkpoint another guy stood up and took a BAVS shoot at us and unfortunately got a hit. Since we had 2 hitpoints we quickly blocked the way, activated a smoke and disembarked and started moving up the hills into the Orlov base. The kills racked up fast since no one was really ready for us to flank while our tank car drove around inside the base.

The attack lasted for about 10 minutes and then everyone (except 3 guys that decided to walk back home) of us was unfortunately dead but it still was a funny attack and an unexpected one.

Some Orlovs guy video of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COdUY_KrU58

At dinner time, we were sitting down and thinking what to do next since we didn’t really get that many missions from HQ. The G.B.M squad came over and told us they had an idea and wanted to see what we thought about it. Since neither our commander nor Berget crew seemed to be able to solve the issue with breaking Ravens and Orlovs up, they came to the conclusion that if we were to sell JudgementDay to the Orlovs we could ally up with them and the last day of fighting would be a bit different.

We checked with our company commander if he supported the idea (purely off game , just to check) and he thought it would be a nice twist. At this time, we were also told infantry would do some kind of attack and that we may be needed for this later on. We said that we would stay on standby until 22:00 and if no call had been made to us at that time, we would go set up some kind of early negotiations with the Orlovs.

At 22:00 no one had radioed us so we mounted up and headed for the northern part of the map. Once we drove over the border we started waving white flags. Luckily enough the Orlovs had sent 2 cars to block the road some 300 meters before their checkpoint. We stopped our car and told them over the PA system that we came in piece and wanted to talk with their commanders.

They didn’t respond until they finally sent a guy forward walking towards us. We sent our negotiator to meet him and after 10-20 minutes he called us over the radio that they would send a commander over and that we were to park in a hidden parking space next to them.

When all of our cars (3 of em) had parked they searched our vehicles and also told us we would have no weapons and ammo unless they said so (we agreed on this off game). They had sent 2 guys (Orlovs Mechanized commander and some other dude) to talk to us. Before the meeting started, we told them what we had in mind and he called Berget to see if we even could strike this kind of deal. They apparently told us yes and that this may be the solution to turning the game around for the PMC:s.

After some 45 minutes of discussion amongst the leaders and our negotiators we agreed on trying to complete this the same night (we initially proposed to do this on Sunday so the game wouldn’t be affected to much). We’d try to bring JudgementDay back as soon as we could (if he hadn’t already gone to bed).

They drove off and we started driving back to base and immediately when we parked there, to our surprise we see JudgementDay outside the HQ tent. I jumped out of the car and the others parked the cars so we could quickly head out again. 2 of us headed for the HQ tent and luckily enough he were alone (2 guys had a question but after he answered they disappeared). We told him we had something BIG to show him inside the back of our 4’th car (cause they had side doors and plenty of space for passengers) and to bring pen and paper. When he got outside the car we came to an stalemate until the guy behind him finally knocked him out! We loaded him up and once again drove off to the north of the map. All in all, it took no more than 5 minutes from the time we parked until we were driving off again.

We left our 3rd car to spread some rumor about Judge being on the toilet and later that he’d gone to bed. They even took the guard job near HQ tent so they could oversee all possible information (big up)!

At the same spot as before they still had 2 cars on guard duty so we drove up to them and flashed our lights 3 times (so they knew it was us). They sent a couple of extra cars over and then escorted us to their base.

When we arrived their base was under some small attacks by an unknown party. They escorted us up in their base as we had to carry Judge (who still was “knocked out”). Once we came to their tents, they placed him on the ground and someone injected him with epinephrine (adrenaline). He then woke up and a large LARP section of this deal took place!

Image

After this we drove home and went to bed, time was now around 03:30.

Saturday:
The last day involved a lot of driving around reinforcing all defences against Ravens. We also helped Orlovs to push for their “final” objective.

Summary:
Our squad had a great time, but once again, not because of berget supplied missions and such. The winning concept of attending a Berget game still seems to be to come up with a lot of your own stuff (even though a chain of command is in place in this type of team).

Playing as a Mech unit was however really fun and allowed us to explore much. It also makes it easier to respawn and go out again when you die on the other side of the map.

Thanks:
AceCunow: Many thanks for trying to organize meaningful missions and keeping the force togheter.
Tomten: Thanks for great HQ radio work during Thursday evening.
JudgementDay: A lot of work was done before the event took place, that is not to be forgotten, thanks for that!
Trouble: Thanks for agreeing to the deal on Friday!
Stormrider: The PMC patches were awesome, thanks a bunch for setting us up!

Everyone in Hatchet 4: We had a blast playing with you guys and hope to do it again someday!
Everyone: Thanks for coming, the more the merrier as they say!

Game Masters / Crew: The logistics work, just add some time to the story, missions around it and this will be a solid game!

Short feedback:
+ Gaming area, altough limited on roads when ur in lerando it is still a nice area.
+ Water and toilets in PMC base.
+ 900+ players makes it possible to do a lot of crazy things.
+ artillery strikes are nice.
+ BAVS system although range and receiver placements could be better.
+ PES system (could however have been utilized better by giving orders, etc).
+ PMC base is a very nice camp site
- very few missions provided by berget.
- very few missions provided by commander (atleast that we know of, this might be entirely wrong).
- no actions from bergets side to solve the mess with PMCs being alone against Ravens and Orlovs.
- no map was provided at checkin.
- few actual civilians although it seemed to be more this year.
- unbalanced game when orlovs and ravens decided to join up.

+/- rule update needed regarding running over people who stands in ones way!

to our surprise we see JudgementDay outside the HQ tent. I jumped out of the car and the others parked the cars so we could quickly head out again. 2 of us headed for the HQ tent and luckily enough he were alone (2 guys had a question but after he answered they disappeared).
These two guys who Judge was talking with, did they wear khaki middle eastern style clothes and left the tent by walking?

I see. It was good that you waited for us to leave. It was me and my XO who were visiting judge. It would not have been good thing that you guys would have taken us with judge. Knowing that what happened to judge at the orlovs camp, i prefer other fate for myself :P

Regarding the people standing in car's way - I saw the whole situation first hand, so I'd like to comment to it, because that was a rather serious moment. I understand that intentional standing in car's way is against the rules, (I tried to call the guy off, however he had his own head.) but the driver really did not help the situation either. Yes, it was a tense stand-off, all trigger fingers were itching, (my BAVSgrenadier asked me if he should smoke the car right away, I told him to hold fire at the moment, because I was afraid that someone could easily get run over in the fray) but even though standing in front of a car is against the rules, trying to scare the standing guy off by trying to slowly drive forward, damn, that was not only against the rules, but also against common sense. You know, a foot on a pedal can slip... And retaliating one broken rule by breaking another is plain stupid in general.

That argument could double back on itself though. I mean, isn't it common sense not to stand in front of a car that is moving? ;)

That being said; your point is still valid.

Yes, that what I'm trying to say: Standing in front of the car - against rules and common sense. But reacting to this by doing something that is also againt rules and common sense? Not good.

The car also told the guy by a speker that it was against the rules to build a human roadblock, he got 35 seconds to decide what to do. He chose to remain in front of the vehicle and break the rules. By chosing that, he destroyed that moment for 7ppl inside the car.
