Good point dude. When I said a few ice cubes though, I didn't mean enough to make the water really cold...just cool. I personally have been doing this for several years now and have had no ill effects but this is, however, not to say this would not affect anyone else so you're safe bet would be to leave the ice out of the hydration unit completely. I do stand on the Camelbak-style hydration unit though as it's also a good "almost" hands-free and out-of-the-way unit for hydrating yourself out on the field.

Thanks for the "safety tip" NL_Lexxie. :D

After drinking large amounts of water in a relatively short period of time you can get "water disgust/sickness" just from the sheer amount of tasteless fluid going through your system. Water consumption slowly goes down, and you get dehydrated.

You can avoid this by mixing water with isotonic powder drink, fruit powder drink (like Bolero which is sugar free) or similar. Worked for me on intense multi-day events and desert hikes...

A 3 liter Camelbak is perfect for Berget, just make sure it's always full when you leave HQ.

If you want to keep your camelback clean and keep their ability to keep water clean, put only clear water in it (mark in the manual)

and if you're used to drink mineral water don't forget to take "micropur" pills to clean water :) or you will be sick and it's useful to conserve water in the camelback :)

why not have water in the hydration carrier and have an energy drink or like it in a smaller container in/on your gear?

I will have 3l camelbak, 1-2 50cl bottles with energy powder drinks and one of my firstlinepouches filled with energybars and calorie bars just incase u get stuck on a misson and havent eaten...

The answer is,

- less space in your gear (and more weight)
- time (mixing/buying drink for the smaller containers)
- attention (keeping the consumption on even level, amount of water vs energy drinks)
- hygenie (handling and drinking from different containers, products)

It's more simple to carry the mixed stuff in the camelbak... After doing this for 5 days in a searing hot (40-50 Celsius) and dirty enviroment, I don't see any drawback, except you have to wash out the camelbak 2-3 times when you get home.

The bottom line is, keep water consumption on a steady level, or your game performance will go down. The mixed drink in the camelbak helps you to stay on this level on the long run, with minimum attention and effort.

Last year I had 3l camelbak with only pure in it and a 1l Camelbak hydration bottle in a molle pouch where I had 1l energy/sport drink. The energy drink came in a little package and 1 package was supposed to put in a 1l of water. Simple, easy and no need to wash you camelbak or worry about bacteria in your drinking water.

Also the ratio of the drinks (water to energy drink) was correct. Mainly you are supposed to drink water but also have something that balances your water/salt ratio. Too much of any one of those is not healthy. Too much water and not enough salts f%cks up your salt balance in yous body, too much salts and not enough water f%cks up your hydration and liquid balance in your body.

Having read the rules, whilst this is my first Berget, it's not my first multi-day 'outdoor' event. Hope this is OK.

Don't let Day1 of Berget be the first day you're using your first MRE. [or wearing your new boots]. A couple of weeks in advance try a few different MREs so that you determine;

1) which tastes OK
2) suits your metabolism and does not make you ill
3) you learn how to use them.

Personal choices will reign when it comes to hydration and food. Experienced advise should be sought. Certainly think about it.

I'll be doing what I usually do, which is drink plain old water, a little and often, aiming to drink a minimum of 2l and then more depending on my length of activity.

Food wise, it'll be stuff that is easy to carry and simple. Dried fruits, nuts for snacking and MREs for main meals.

I'll supplement this with the odd a choco bar, a sugar drink and savoury dish from the main area.

Good Hunting

Water & Food

Post by yasirotta » 02 Feb 2009, 20:56

There a lot of speaking of water, so here´s mine opinion.

1. You cant bring too much water (unless weight comes in question)
2. Drink mouthful every 15 or 20 minutes. Drink much = Pee much
3. Keep at least 1 liter of water whit you. Rest in base or camp to refill.
4. If you drink Coca-Cola or other soda, make sure last drink is water.
5. Drink also before you sleep. This keeps headache away.

And then the Food

I suggest to buy canned food. Easy to carry, and just need to warm up.
You can also take MRE´s (Meals Ready to Eat), but in long run you will
get tired to just those. Salted meat wont get spoiled, but those won´t
make good your liquid balance. Protein bars could be better snack, even
they are little more expensive. Remember to eat your vitamins.

Bear

Post by yasirotta » 03 Feb 2009, 16:16

And what comes to sleeping, wear eye-protection if possible. In berget5 one mate woke up to burst at his face. We was sleeping at FFF base, where we diddnt expect anything like this to happen. If you sleep in tent, make sure your goggles are on before you step out.

Not for eating, but the hunting laws are strict, it's legal if you got the right papers to hunt Bear.
