Just a quick reminder, the mosquitoes up North do not carry any disease per se, so no need to panic about them.

Just use repellant and slap the ones that get through ;)

By the way, we've been talking about mosquitos so far (hence the Topic title Sherlock?) but what about the other pesky blood-lust crawlies? Is there any gadflies/horseflies or buffalo flies/ black gnats in this region to be known about?

I reckon there's ticks too even though area is so far North? If there are they propably carry lyme disease/ borreliosis?

To my knowledge these nasties all need tougher cocktails to knoecked off. Any local intel against these irritations? >=)

well we have Tabanidae (horseflies) that will give you a bite anyway, mosqito repellent or not.

Tics however is unusal, but exists, in the north. but the line for lyme disease/ borreliosis is further south in sweden(think a line across sweden starting in sthlm and then paint the map red south of that map). So dont worry to much about getting sick from that.

Well the best tip i can give against tics is mosqito repellant and eating Garlic.
a not so tested tip is spraying Lemon juice around ankels, wrist and neck casue there is supposed to be a substance in lemon that tics hate.

Ticks love all kinds of perfumes. Best thing is to have no open skin around boots and if crawling, keep gloves on, prefferably those longer ones such as flyer gloves that again leave no skin exposed.

Horse flies, I heard about those little fckers. What works on them?

If you have ventilation zippers on your pants and jacket. REMEMBER TO CLOSE THEM AT NIGHTFALL. I forgot last year and I could trace the blood veins along my legs. got about 60-70 mosqito bites in a couple of hours.

I see the temperature still falls to 4-5 degrees C during the night. Does that seem to bother sweedish mosquitos?
Those bloody suckers tend to disappear below 10-12 in my latitude.

On horseflies you could try a BB-gun...for i have still not found anything that holds them back other then thick clothes.

During nights there are usually only mosqitos in the tents. but warm nights they come out anyways. but its depending on the species of mosqito to... dont know what species there are in sollefteå.

There is little you can do. Horse flies love swetty skinn, so the best thing to do is keep exposed skinn dry. If nothing else, terminate them once they try to sit on you.

What I know of Norvegian horse flies, once they sit on your skin, you cant get em off without losing that part of the skin where they literally hooked up on... Hope Swedish ones arent that stubborn. :?

About mosquitos and tents. If you have stove(kamina) in your tent that is a good device to get rid of these little bastards. Just heat your tent with stove a little and voila mosquitos are gone. The heat kills/drives them off just remember to keep the tent door closed :)

But the best thing for good nights sleep is to get some of these repellant spirals. Its a spiral of insect repellant that you light with your lighter. It burns slowly for many many hours making smoke that drives the bugs away. Last year me and my mates but one spiral to our tents middle pole before going to sleep. We had the tent door open and i was only sleeping top of my sleeping bag with almost no cloth. In the morning not a single bite on my body :)

EDIT: Safety issues, none if you do it correctly. Plant the spiral middle of the pole so the smoke will move around 1m from the ground so the sleeping ppl dont inhale the smoke. Second use your brains while planting the spiral and you wont get any fire inside the tent. For example you can tie a empty food can to the pole with paracord and then put the spiral inside the can...
